SRIWEDARI Culture of Solo T-Shirt Design

I created this illustration in 2024 for a course assignment that required designing a T-shirt with the theme of iconic elements from Solo/Surakarta Indonesia. I chose 'SRIWEDARI' because my illustration style has a romantic theme, and I happened to come across this character among Solo's iconic elements. This led to the creation of this illustration.

Explanation of SRIWEDARI

Sriwedari Park, as narrated in the Serat Arjunasasra, is an artificial garden owned by King Arjunasasra, whose beauty rivals that of a heavenly garden, as it was created by the god Batara Wisnu. While many historical names have been revived in the modern era, 'Sriwedari' remains an exception, with Sriwedari Park in Surakarta renowned for its undeniable charm and delightful atmosphere.

The history of Sriwedari Park dates back to the reign of Sinuhun Pakubuwana II, who relocated the royal palace to the village of Sala after it was severely damaged by an attack from Chinese forces. The location of the new palace was determined by the steps of Sinuhun's elephant, which stopped near Loji Sriwedari, now known as Balekambang. The nearby village of Kadipala quickly developed into a large settlement, while the remaining land was used to establish Sriwedari Park.

During the reign of the current Sinuhun, the Sriwedari Park area was divided into three sections: the royal palace’s residential area to the east and south, a museum to the east, and the house of Ki Padmasusastra to the west. This land was eventually developed into the royal garden, Sriwedari, by Kanjeng Raden Adipati Sasradiningat. Initially, the park felt hot due to the newly planted vegetation, but over time, its beauty became increasingly captivating, resembling the original Sriwedari garden.

Today, Sriwedari Park is one of Surakarta's most popular entertainment venues, complete with a museum, a literary garden, and a zoo. On weekends, the park is filled with crowds enjoying various entertainments and performances, accompanied by the melodies of music and the gentle breeze. The atmosphere there brings a sense of joy, as if transporting visitors to a state of ecstasy, making Sriwedari Park an inseparable part of the 'soul' of Surakarta.
